Sangeh Bali, The Sacred Monkey Forest

For Balinese, Sangeh Bali has its own meaning. Although not all Balinese have visited this sacred forest, but most of them already knew about this place. Yes, Sangeh is a very popular Bali destinations beside another one: Ubud Monkey forest. Sangeh bali also already known as a sacred monkey forest.

A legend says that when Hanuman (a monkey warrior in Hindu myth) lifted Mahameru mountain in Java, some parts of the mountain collapsed in Bali. Part of this mountain was called Bukit Sari. The hill then controlled by the monkeys. Later, this Bukit Sari hill became unsustainable after made into a park by the royal Mengwi in earlier times.

Sangeh forest area is styled like a garden. Many Sangeh monkey inhabit this forest and become the mascot for Sangeh. This bali destinations is located in the Sangeh village, Mengwi subdistrict, Badung regency. The distance is about 20 kilometers from Denpasar or Kuta beach and can be reached in about a half hour drive.

sangeh monkey forestBesides known as a monkey forest, Sangeh Bali also has a lot of nutmeg trees. These trees age are about hundreds years old, some even up to three hundred years. These trees has a good structure, growing straight up, and said can not be grown in places other than Sangeh. Local peoples also do not dare to cut down the trees, although trees had withered and died. There is also a tree namely “Lanang Wadon” because the shaped like men and women sex (lanang=men, wadon=women). Peoples also said, the monkeys are divided into three areas and they were all centered at a sacred temple called Bulit Sari temple.

Sangeh monkeys have a wild character. These animals often take things from visitors and will not be refunded if it not given food. For the tourists, it is advisable not to bring objects that hang on the neck, like a pocket camera, cell phone, or sunglasses. Hat also suggested to be released while in Sangeh Bali.

You only need to pay USD 1 per person to be able to interact with the monkeys in this bali destinations. The forest setting also very good. There is a small road that specially designed so visitors can see the beauty of these forest. This sacred forest is located near the highway, so easy to reach with buses, car, or motorcycle.
